University of Ghana commissions 1,200-bed Diamond Jubilee Hall to ease student accommodation crisis

The University of Ghana has taken a major step toward resolving its long-standing student accommodation challenges with the official commissioning of the Diamond Jubilee Hall, a 1,200-bed facility designed to provide affordable and comfortable housing.

The newly inaugurated hall, supervised by the Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate (PDMSD) in collaboration with a private consultancy team led by Dr. George Menz, marks a milestone achievement for the institution. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo emphasized that the project reflects her administration’s commitment to delivering sustainable solutions to the university’s infrastructure needs.

Prof. Amfo noted that the hall’s allocation process will be transparent and timely, assuring students that detailed guidelines will be released soon. She stressed that management approved a joint arrangement between UGEL and PDMSD to oversee operations, ensuring efficiency in the use of the facility.

The Acting Director of PDMSD, Peter Abalansah, revealed that prudent cost-cutting measures reduced the project’s initial budget from GHC 120 million to GHC 55 million, showcasing the university’s dedication to financial discipline.

The Diamond Jubilee Hall features 448 fully furnished rooms, including 264 double-occupancy rooms and 184 four-person rooms, equipped with study desks, ceiling fans, and comfortable bedding. Students will also benefit from shared washrooms, kitchens, reading rooms, TV lounges, eateries, shops, a washing bay, and offices to support both academic and social life on campus.
