The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to addressing the university’s persistent accommodation challenges with the official inauguration of the Diamond Jubilee Hall.
The new 1,200-bed facility, constructed under the supervision of the Physical Development and Municipal Services Directorate (PDMSD) with consultancy led by Dr. George Menz, is designed to provide affordable and comfortable housing for students.
Speaking at the commissioning, Prof. Amfo described the project as a “monumental milestone,” noting that it reflects the university’s dedication to delivering innovative and sustainable solutions to accommodation shortages.
“In the coming days, you will receive detailed information on how to secure a bed,” she assured students, adding that management had approved joint administration of the facility by UGEL and PDMSD to ensure efficient allocation and avoid delays.
The Acting Director of PDMSD, Peter Abalansah, revealed that cost-saving measures had cut the project budget nearly in half — from an initial GHC 120 million to GHC 55 million.
The Diamond Jubilee Hall comprises 448 fully furnished rooms — 264 double-occupancy and 184 four-person units — each equipped with study desks, comfortable bedding, ceiling fans, and shared washrooms. Additional facilities include kitchens, reading rooms, TV lounges, a maintenance unit, a washing bay, JCR tutorial and executive offices, as well as eateries and shops to enrich student life.
