Government to launch district-level housing projects to address national housing deficit

The Ghanaian government is set to launch a district-level initiative aimed at tackling the country’s significant housing deficit. The program, which was announced by Minister for , Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, during the Busia Institute Lecture at Takoradi Technical University on July 31, 2024, seeks to address Ghana’s 1.8 million housing gap by decentralizing housing development across the country.

Minister Oppong Nkrumah outlined the government’s strategic approach, emphasizing that the initiative is not just about building homes but also about fostering regional growth. “Our vision is to decentralize housing development, making it accessible and manageable at the district level,” he stated. The program will provide a range of housing options, from low-cost apartments to larger family homes, tailored to the specific needs of each region.

The initiative is also expected to create job opportunities for the youth and boost local economies. Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, praised the program for aligning with regional development goals, noting its potential to enhance regional infrastructure and economic activities.

The lecture was attended by several dignitaries, including the Vice Chancellor of Takoradi Technical University, Rev. Prof. John Frank Eshun, who lauded the government’s focus on inclusive and sustainable development. He highlighted the university’s commitment to supporting regional growth and expressed willingness to engage in and development to ensure the success of the projects.

Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, Chairman of the Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area, emphasized the importance of community involvement in the housing projects. He called on traditional authorities to facilitate land acquisition for the initiatives, ensuring that they meet the specific needs of local communities.

Anane Agyei, Executive Director of the Busia Institute, expressed appreciation for the government’s commitment to addressing housing issues and pledged the Institute’s support through research, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement. He stressed the importance of ongoing collaboration to ensure the success of the district-level housing projects.
