Deputy Minister for Housing, Dr Prince Hamid Armah, has stressed the need for broad collaboration to implement Ghana‘s roadmap for decarbonising the building and construction sector.
Speaking at the AH Hotel in Accra on October 24, he described the plan as more than a government initiative, calling on all stakeholders—government agencies, private sector players, financial institutions, and civil society—to contribute their expertise and resources.
“The success of this roadmap depends on the collaboration of all stakeholders,” Dr. Armah stated.
He noted that with Ghana’s urban population at 58% and an urbanisation rate of 3.3%, the demand for construction materials continues to rise, making sustainable practices essential. The sector currently accounts for over 37% of global energy-related carbon emissions, according to the United Nations Environment Programme.
Developed in partnership with UN-Habitat and UNOPs, the roadmap outlines key strategies, including promoting energy-efficient systems, using green building materials, advancing water conservation, and fostering innovative technologies.
Dr. Armah described the initiative as a “blueprint for meaningful change” and emphasised the importance of climate-resilient structures and sustainable urban planning.
As he officially launched the roadmap, he urged stakeholders to actively participate in its implementation.
“I urge everyone here to actively engage, share expertise, and collaborate to achieve the vision we have outlined,” he said.
He expressed optimism that through cooperation and innovation, Ghana can build a greener and more sustainable future.
