The Chamber of Real Estate (CRE) is ramping up efforts to promote a social housing scheme to address Ghanaians’ urgent housing needs. This initiative aligns with the Chamber’s broader vision of fostering social responsibility and urban development while addressing the growing divide between private property ownership and housing affordability.
Historically, Ghana’s housing policies have been government-led, creating significant gaps in the availability of affordable housing. Recent trends in the real estate market have seen a rise in private property ownership, often at prices beyond the reach of the average Ghanaian, exacerbating the country’s housing deficit and deepening social inequalities.
The CRE has partnered with the Chartered Institute of Realtors (CIR) to spearhead support for a social housing scheme. Their strategy includes developing affordable rental options for low-income families, improving informal settlements, and promoting public-private partnerships for housing projects.
The Chamber is also advocating for streamlined regulations and incentives to encourage developers to build affordable housing units. Additionally, training programs for skilled labour in the construction and maintenance of these homes are part of the initiative.
The CRE calls for the collective support of private institutions, developers, traditional leaders, public institutions, and the government to tackle Ghana’s housing crisis. The Chamber believes that unified efforts are essential in creating long-term solutions to the country’s housing challenges.
